spinal tap and other firsts.

this week has been a series of surreal firsts one after another. i've attended my first true bridal shower in the South, heard a soldier share his musings on Iraq, prepared for an intense arts festival to begin and had my first spinal tap.

yup, a spinal tap. no big deal, really. i found myself in the emergency room sunday morning and to check out the symptoms the medical crew had to do a lumbar puncture to rule out menangitis. of course, i'm glad it did rule out menangitis. but it was not my ideal way to spend super bowl sunday. by kick-off i was stretched out in a straight line on the couch, heavily medicated and for all practical purposes sedated. that had me reflecting on the status of american health care... but that's another matter entirely. in any event, there's a whole new way to ponder life as a result of my brush with the health care system. certainly i'm lucky that i do so as a healthy person, not from hospital bed recovering from a potentially fatal disease. although that would impact my way of thinking, too.

as i continue my adventure in adulthood, it seems as though i'm continually reminded of how much i don't know. how much i haven't solved. how much i haven't even considered. it seems as though the many firsts in my life send me into a new and different space - one that informs my decisions and colors my perceptions (almost always for the better).

so now i add to my list of firsts a blog. here's hoping it brings a new perspective to my life.
