Sketches of Thoughts

News you can use. Well, maybe.

"Women with curvy figures are likely to be brighter than waif-like counterparts and may well produce more intelligent offspring, a US study suggests." It may not be the most newsworthy thing I've heard all day, but this article (at least the first couple of paragraphs) is music to my ears. Obviously I haven't checked out the part about the smarter offspring, but I do think I'm at least as bright as average.

Because. Just Because.

Just because you think you're so pretty
Just because you think you're so hot
Just because you think you've got something
That nobody else has got
You cause me to spend all my money
You laugh and call me old Santa Claus
I'm tell you, baby, I'm through with you
Because, just because.

There is absolutely no reason I've been singing these polka lyrics all day long. Except that it's a fun polka. Polka was a nightmare to me as a child. I was never so keen on riding in the back of a pickup truck during the The Fair while all the cooler kids sat on the curb and collected candy. But when I met my husband I came to terms with my polka past. In fact, after our wedding we went to the ol' hometown for a wedding reception, and instead of a honeymoon, we played in a polka band with my dad and grandpa. Maybe it's weird. But I don't care. I think it's kind of special and fun. Because, just because.

Tragedy! Well, not really.

This morning while out walking with Pete and Etta I had an undeniable hankering for Honey Nut Cheerios and a chocolate donut. These are not cravings I have often, and since I'm on the late Christmas tree decorating crew today I decided to head to Publix to indulge.

I remembered everything on the list, and the bakery guy even picked out the perfect donut, covered in beautiful chocolate. Mmmmm. I could hardly wait to the get out the door and home to that wonderful tasty morsel.

Imagine the lock of shock, horror and surprise that must have been on my face when the bagger turned the chocolate donut in its plastic container perpendicular to the bagging surface, compromising tasty chocolate. Horror of horrors!

This turned out to be about the worst thing about my Tuesday, which makes it not such a bad day at all.

It

Mission Not Accomplished and Political Thoughts.

I had planned to blog every day in November. Already I've failed! But yesterday was a busy day, so I'm going to let go of the guilt and just blog daily the rest of the month.

This morning I'm enjoying a moment of relaxation. And for me, relaxation often means one of a few things, including NEWS.

I've been readying and catching up on news on my favorite sites. I read what our prez-wanna-bes are up to in my homestate this weekend. Now that I am a resident of the fourth most populous state in the union, I can't help but be a little agitated that I don't have the kind of access to the candidates that the residents of Pocahontas, IA do.

Allow me to explain as briefly as I know how: the National Democratic Party is pissed that Florida moved up its primary because we all know Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina should be calling the shots, and so the NDP basically made all the candidates swear they wouldn't do any campaigning here in the Sunshine State. (If you want you can read about it here. I agree that the traditional caucuses and primaries are important, but boy would I like a say in choosing the candidate for President. I mean, I know which party I'll likely be voting for, and they could even run Alf and I'd vote for him. Nevertheless I fancy myself as an engaged citizen and am agitated at the slighting.

So take this National Democratic Party: stop calling me and asking for cash (which I lack anyway, and wouldn't probably give to you even if I had more) if you think the 210 electoral votes from my state are so unimportant you don't want folks like me to be involved in the preliminary decision-making. Now how's that for news and relaxation?
